Viewers can look away from a livestream and keep listening. They cannot keep following a conversation they cannot understand. That makes sound the continuity of the experience—and the first production system worth fixing.

Good livestream audio is not a microphone purchase. It is a chain: source, room, microphone, placement, preamp, processing, mix, synchronization, encoding, platform delivery and playback. A weakness anywhere in that path becomes part of the show.

Start at the source

The cleanest signal begins before the mixer. Reduce avoidable noise from HVAC, computers, refrigerators, traffic, loose hardware and reflective surfaces. Move the microphone closer to the useful sound and farther from the unwanted sound.

Microphone choice follows the format:

  • A close dynamic microphone can control a difficult room and a consistent host.
  • A lavalier preserves freedom of movement but needs careful placement and clothing control.
  • A boom or shotgun microphone can stay outside the frame when the room and positioning support it.
  • A music performance may require separate inputs and a dedicated broadcast mix rather than a single room microphone.

The expensive option is not automatically the right option. The microphone that stays at a useful distance, rejects the room and matches the performance will usually win.

Build gain in the right places

A weak signal amplified late brings noise with it. A signal driven too hard clips before a limiter can save it. Set gain so ordinary speech or performance lives comfortably below the system’s ceiling, with enough headroom for the loudest real moment.

Watch meters, but listen as well. A meter cannot tell you that a lavalier is rubbing against fabric, a gate is cutting off sentence endings or a compressor is making every breath distractingly loud.

OBS’s own audio guidance recommends listening early in the signal path and again when the audio reaches the software. That principle extends to professional systems: verify the source, the mix and the actual encoded return.

Mix for the stream, not only the room

The mix that works through speakers in a venue may not work online. The room already contains acoustic sound; the livestream does not. Remote viewers may need more direct speech, more audience response, different music balance and carefully controlled ambience.

Create a broadcast mix that reflects what the online audience should experience. For a live performance, that often means:

  • direct sources that provide clarity and impact;
  • room or audience microphones that restore space and response;
  • processing designed for the stream rather than copied blindly from the house mix;
  • someone listening to the broadcast feed on representative devices.

The online mix is its own product. Treating it as an unused auxiliary output is how a great room becomes a flat stream.

Use processing to protect clarity

High-pass filtering can remove irrelevant low-frequency energy. Equalization can reduce masking or restore intelligibility. Compression can keep important speech present. A limiter can protect the output from unexpected peaks.

But every processor can create a new failure. Too much noise reduction produces artifacts. An aggressive gate removes quiet words. Heavy compression makes the room pump. A limiter driven constantly is distortion with better marketing.

Make small, audible decisions for a specific purpose. Bypass the processor and confirm it is actually helping.

Keep speech, playback and alerts in one hierarchy

A creator stream often combines microphones, music, browser audio, remote guests, alerts, videos and sound effects. If every source is mixed to demand equal attention, the audience receives noise instead of energy.

Decide what wins in each moment. Duck background music under speech. Keep alerts expressive without covering the host. Normalize playback assets before the show. Give remote participants a return mix that prevents echo without starving them of context.

A clean mix guides attention in the same way a director guides the picture.

Check synchronization before blaming performance

Audio and video travel through different processing paths. Cameras, capture devices, switchers, software and platform settings can add unequal delay. Even a strong performance feels wrong when lips, drum hits or product actions do not align with sound.

Test synchronization with an unmistakable visual and audible event. Check it on the program output and on the platform return. Recheck after changing resolution, converters, processing or routing. If different sources have different delays, solve the system rather than shifting everything around one temporary symptom.

Monitor what the audience receives

Listening to the mixer is not enough. The encoder can receive the wrong bus. A muted software source can bypass the hardware monitor. Platform processing can expose a problem that the control room never heard.

Use a separate device and account to monitor the delivered stream. Keep the return low enough to avoid feedback, but available to a person who can identify distortion, silence, drift or incorrect routing. Watch platform health messages as well; YouTube’s Live Control Room flags format and bitrate problems that can degrade delivery.

Test on ordinary playback

Studio monitors reveal problems, but most viewers are not listening in a studio. Check the mix on a phone, laptop, television and common earbuds. Confirm that speech remains intelligible at low volume and that music still carries energy without depending on deep bass.

Mono compatibility matters when sources or playback environments collapse the mix. Captions matter when viewers cannot listen at all. Neither replaces good audio, but both expand the number of situations in which the content remains understandable.

Record a recovery path

Keep a clean local program recording and, when the format justifies it, isolated microphones or stems. Platforms can compress, interrupt or fail. A local recording protects the replay and gives editors room to correct balance, remove a technical interruption or create new deliverables.

Label and verify those recordings before the show. A recorder that was armed in rehearsal but not after lunch is not redundancy.
